Confidentiality

Melanoma Focus undertakes to protect your privacy and respect the confidentiality of any personal data you share with us. In operating the confidential Melanoma Helpline service our Helpline Nurses collect sensitive personal information when you first contact them and during subsequent exchanges by email or telephone in order to answer your questions and provide support and guidance. We may also apply this information in training, quality monitoring and evaluating the performance of our service. Providing information to the Melanoma Helpline assumes your consent to these uses of your data.

Personal information we receive will not be passed to anyone outside the Helpline Team without your express permission, other than in exceptional circumstances. These might include: a child reporting abuse; a person reporting serious self-harm; a person expressing the intention of harming someone else; or a report of a terrorist threat.

Privacy Statement

Melanoma Focus is the data controller of your information. We will collect only the minimum amount of information needed to operate the Melanoma Helpline for your benefit and will keep it in an anonymised form. We will make it clear to you when we are collecting such information and will not do anything with it that you would not reasonably expect.

This Privacy Statement is made under the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1988, which controls how personal information is used by organisations and requires us to follow the data protection principles designed to ensure your information is:

  • used fairly and lawfully
  • used for limited, specifically-stated purposes
  • used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive
  • accurate
  • kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary
  • handled according to people’s data protection rights
  • kept safe and secure
  • not transferred outside the European Economic Area without adequate protection
